Why do people obsess over lab coats anyway?
Either way, there's something magical about that lab coat. I love it, even though I've been wearing lab coats since high school.
Maybe its the realization that I'm finally getting into university, and that I'm one step closer to becoming a doctor.
Maybe it's because white coats are part of the typical doctor's apparel, although many hospitals are ditching white coats now.
Donning the white coat can make you look intelligent, although it can also make you look snobby.
In Middle Eastern countries, where women are often called names and ogled at simply for being a woman, lady doctors (sometimes they're not even doctors or scientists) don the white coat while walking across the street. Wearing a white coat can keep you from being harassed by men.
Did you know that donning a lab coat can temporarily boost your intelligence? In a study, several people were given an unused white laboratory coat.
The people were divided into 3 groups.
The first group was told the coat belonged to workers and served to protect them from dust particles.
The second group was told the coat belonged to an artist (Seriously? Our coats at art class had paint and what-not all over them.)
The last group was told the coat belonged to scientists/doctors.
All three groups were then asked to don the white coat and were subjected to the Stroop task.
Strangely enough, the last group of performed better than any other group, even though the coats were basically the same.
So if you were looking for an excuse to buy a lab coat, here's your excuse.
