YES! This!

Thank you, pediatrician who put this up, and thank you, Redditor who posted it!

This is a rant post, specifically aimed at anti-vaxxers. Do not read if you don't like pro-vaxxers, because I am one. If you keep reading this, you might get your feelings hurt (not like I'd particularly care about crushing your anti-vaxx ideas, but I like to pretend I'm nice)

<3

I had an uncle who had poliomyelitis, paralysis included. This may have been years ago, as the polio virus used to be endemic in a lot of countries back then (it's only endemic in 3 countries right now. And guess what? People don't do vaccinations in those 3 countries due to various reasons).

International tourists can still bring all sorts of viruses with them to your precious first-world country and infect your cute little unvaccinated children.
Vaccination rates in certain first-world countries have been dropping to the point where developing-world countries may actually have a higher vaccination rate than us Western people. That'd really be a shame.

Don't be stupid and think "Oh, even if there are sick children around my child, my child won't get ill anyways. That won't happen to us :)!", because apparently, it does.
Also, don't assume that you don't have to immunize your kid, because there's herd immunity.
Because there will always be more people like you who will think the very same thing.

What will happen to the herd immunity if there are more people like you? It'd be like deliberately leaving some holes in a wall of shields, because well.. What are the chances of a weapon striking you through the hole when there's the rest of your shield formation? Virtually none, right?

Wrong.

Several people were infected with measles in December 2014 while they were having a blast at Disneyland, California. The number of confirmed cases is now 72 people.
Some of these people were too young to be vaccinated against the disease. Others weren't vaccinated (for anti-vaxx-all-natural-movements or religious reasons, I guess?) while they certainly were old enough for the vaccine.

It is estimated that 90 to 95% of the visitors of the theme park had been vaccinated, leaving 5-10% open for infection.

'Tis a shame that the measles virus is a ridiculously contagious virus. If you get in contact with a carrier, you're almost guaranteed to get it, provided you have not been vaccinated against it.
But the measles virus was eradicated in the States in 2000. Until the anti-vaxxers decided to become rebellious.

For a virus to have gone from bloody ERADICATED to suddenly infecting 72 people in only a month?
For a first-world country where the majority of the citizens claim that their country is the absolute best, that's really disgraceful.

Shame on you.

It's really a shame that an outbreak of a perfectly preventable disease is necessary to make people immunize their children.
Don't believe the current vaccinations work against Measles?
Fine. Here.

Source: RIVM [1,2]
Left: Mumps/Measles/Rubella vaccination rate. Lighter blues represent better rates.
Right: Amount of confirmed Measles cases in the Netherlands.
The strip of darker blue areas is sometimes known as the infamous 'Bible Belt'. People over there tend to opt out of vaccinations for their children because of their religious beliefs.
Most of the cases are centered around the provinces which have a lower vaccination rate.
One could say that not vaccinating children leaves them more vulnerable to infection.

So, mommies and daddies, please have your children vaccinated.
